Our first vision clinic
Malawi is one of the poorest nations in the world, and many people live on less than a dollar a day. Medical care is difficult to come by, and vision checks are unheard of among the villages. On one of the mission trips—in the summer of 2011—a nurse from Ohio organized a vision clinic. Before coming to Malawi, she received training on how to perform vision screening and how to choose the right corrective lenses. Bringing 750 sets of eyeglasses to Malawi and her newly acquired optometry skills, she was able to set up a mobile vision clinic.
Not only were all of the Passion Center children screened, but 500 people from the surrounding communities also received vision exams. One older woman had not been able to see well enough to correctly count money at her roadside stand, but this changed when she received her glasses. Another man was delighted to receive his glasses, ”I now am able to see the mountains in the distance that everyone talks about!“
